Gallup did a survey around 1993 of over 10,000 employees across N. America. When asked if they were willing & able to contribute more effort to their company with no increase in pay, benefits, or job title the majority answered YES ! When asked how much more they could contribute, the national average was 30% more. When asked why they weren't already doing this extra bit, the reasons that came back were, "Nobody asked me", or "I was told to mind my own business", or "We don't have a system by which I can contribute." Do any of these sound like the situation in your company? Do the employee do the "bare minimum"? Do they feel they get the bare minimum of job security? Are jobs hard to come by in your region? If jobs were suddenly plentiful, would your employee still choose to work there? When consulting, I often interview employees and ask them a few questions to assess their commitment to the company. One of these questions is, "If you were offered the exact same job at a new company opening up down the street, but for 10% more pay, would you accept the position? Why? How would your employees answer that question? How did you feel about the answer they will probably give you (ie. happy, sad, embarassed, relieved, angry, disappointed, ...) Hopefully this will give you some food for thought to find your answer. Glenn
